(4/11/11) - HB 5001 (Jones, S.C.) passed by both houses. The conference committee substitute includes redistricting plans for both the House of Delegates and Senate.

(4/15/11) - Governor McDonnell vetoes HB 5001 citing criticisms mainly of the Senate redistricting plan portion of the Bill.

(4/28/11) - HB 5005 (Jones, S.C.) passed by both houses. The bill includes redistricting plans for both the House of Delegates and Senate.

(4/29/11) - Governor McDonnell signs HB 5005 into law, Ch.1, 2011 Acts of Assembly (Special Session I).

(5/10/11) - The Attorney General's Office submitted the enacted redistricting plans for the House of Delegates and Senate to the Department of Justice for approval pursuant to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. The Office also filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia asking for preclearance of the plans.

(6/17/11) - The Department of Justice precleared the House of Delegates and Senate Redistricting plans (HB 5005/Ch.1, 2011 Acts of Assembly, Special Session I) submitted pursuant to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act on 5/10/11. View Preclearance Letter.

(3/14/12) - The Department of Justice precleared the Congressional Redistricting plan (HB 251/Ch.1, 2012 Acts of Assembly) submitted pursuant to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act on 2/2/12. View Preclearance Letter.

(3/14/12) - The Department of Justice filed a notice with the DC Court showing that a determination was made. View Notice.

(10/2/13) - Suit filed in the federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (Case No. 3:13cv678) challenging the constitutionality of Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District. View Bill of Complaint.
